Susan Alexander, the executive director for South Strand Helping Hand, said every person that walked through her doors on Wednesday needed help with power bills.
Last month alone, she said the office provided more than 12 thousand dollars in utility relief.
“I think it’s the economy, I think it’s people don’t have jobs, I’m getting people in that are on SSI, I’m getting elderly people in, ” said Alexander.
South Strand Helping Hand provides help with part of a utility bill once every 12 months but it isn’t alone.
Waccamaw EOC is a community action agency that has a number of programs including some that help people with heating. Officials with the organization said a person can get served up to twice a year on a case by case basis.
Also, Helping Hand of Myrtle Beach, a short term crisis agency, offers assistance with utilities when the need arises.
