CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Horry County fire chief Joseph Tanner, speaking at a public safety committee on Wednesday, admitted that a medic who was driving an ambulance had dozed off before the crash.

An Horry County Fire Rescue ambulance hit a concrete barrier on US Highway 17 near Sutter Drive on May 2, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Two HCFR employees and a patient inside the ambulance weren’t hurt, SCHP Corporal Sonny Collins said, and the ambulance only had minor damage.

Investigators found the ambulance was going the speed limit, but the ambulance failed to maintain lane. Driver fatigue was not reported to troopers, according to Collins. No charges were filed.

The county confirms the driver was on an overtime shift. County spokeswoman Lisa Bourcier said employees will get the “appropriate level” of training following incidents like this one.
