CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Solicitor Jimmy Richardson announced Friday a man charged with trafficking heroin pleaded guilty to drug charges this week. A judge sentenced him to 20 years in prison.
Richardson said Tiant Smith had a FedEx package shipped from New York to Horry County in February 2014, and inside that package was approximately 200 slips of heroin. After an investigation by the Fifteenth Circuit Drug Enforcement Unit, aided by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division in Columbia, DEU tracked Smith back to his residence and executed a search. Upon searching Smith’s residence, DEU found heroin, methylone—a close structural analog or similar to MDMA, “Molly”—and stolen guns.
This week, Tiant Smith chose to have a jury trial for the charges levied against him: trafficking heroin, possession with intent to distribute a schedule I drug, and possession of two stolen pistols. The judge allowed the state’s evidence—namely heroin, methylone, and guns—to be shown at trial.
After losing the motion to suppress the evidence, Smith pleaded guilty to the charges of trafficking heroin, possession with intent to distribute a schedule I drug, and possession of two stolen pistols. Smith pleaded guilty on Tuesday and was given until Friday at noon to turn himself in.
Smith was sentenced to 20 years in prison for trafficking heroin, 20 years in prison for possession with intent to distribute methylone, and five years in prison for each stolen firearm, all of those sentences will run concurrent.
