Horry County Council vote to separate sick and vacation time for employees

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) – During its spring budget retreat Thursday, Horry County Council voted to separate sick time and vacation time for its employees.

According to Horry County spokeswoman Lisa Bourcier, new hires currently receive a monthly accrual rate equivalent to five weeks of combined sick and vacation time, which gradually increases with seniority.

New hires get 16.67 hours a month of PTO (paid time off), which can be used for vacation, sick, bereavement, etc.

County officials estimate around $8 million annually goes toward paying leave time.

Thursday’s vote also eliminated donated leave, or days employees can pass to others with a low amount of leave time.

Bourcier says council hasn’t decided when the vote will go into effect but will discuss it during a future meeting along with other options to present before its members.
