CONWAY, S.C. (WBTW) – Horry County Council is considering changes to an ordinance passed last year banning the big tents on its beaches. The ban was originally passed last year because dozens of large tents were making it hard for emergency vehicles to make their way along the beach.
The year-long ban covers the 14 mile stretch of beaches in the unincorporated Horry County. Those portions include the beaches:
- South of the town limits of North Myrtle Beach to the Dunes Club in Myrtle Beach (includes Shore Drive, but excludes the town of Briarcliff Acres)
- South of Springmaid Pier to the town limits of Surfside Beach (includes the Myrtle Beach State Park and the campgrounds)
- South of the town limits of Surfside Beach through Garden City Beach to the Georgetown county line
Tuesday, council members will have first reading of an amended ordinance that allows allow small child-sized pop-up tents for infants and small children. It would also allow large tents and tent like structures for special events, including weddings and festival, if a county permit is obtained.
Council members say they decided to revisit the current ordinance following input from the community.
“There have been of course some concerns within the year since we passed, various issues but the most we get are the baby cabanas at east being able to protect some of the infants and the younger children. So council will see an amendment,” Horry County Spokesperson Lisa Bourcier said.
After first reading, county council will have second reading which allows for public input. Third reading should take place in March and it would go into effect immediately.
