Horry County council members are discussing the feasibility of being able to provide curbside trash service to high density unincorporated communities of Horry County like Forestbrook, Carolina Forest and Burgess.

Currently some neighborhoods within Carolina Forest have a curbside service included in their home owner’s association fees. Resident of Waterford Plantation, Ellen Santacroce said they don’t have it included in their HOA and she likes it that way.

“We take our own trash to the dump because we recycle everything, I don’t want to be forced to pay for something I don’t want to do, I don’t want to be forced to pay for something I don’t want to do.” Santacroce said.

Councilman Johnny Vaught says that with a growing population, rather than building another trash drop off center, they are looking to create a franchise agreement with trash haulers.

“That would allow us to close that convenient center and it wouldn’t cost anybody because they already paid for convenient centers on their tax bill so basically it will be a wash of them and it will save us the expense of having to run those convenient centers.” Vaught said.

Some residents told News 13 they have to drive 20 minutes to get to the closest drop off.
Residents from the Clear Pond Neighborhood say trash is included in their homeowner fees, but they are hopeful that a county wide trash program would lower HOA fees.

Councilman Vaught says the council will continue to discuss this topic at upcoming meetings.
