The Horry County Board of Education voted unanimously at its June 15 meeting to appoint Dr. Rick Maxey the Superintendent of Schools.
Maxey has 30 years of experience in teaching and educational leadership.
After six months as Acting Superintendent, and an evaluation, the School Board determined that he has exhibited the leadership abilities desired and have issued him a three-year contract through June 2018.
Maxey will be taking over the position after the resignation of Dr. Cindy Elsberry.
He was the Deputy Superintendent for HCS for more than three years before his appointment as Acting Superintendent.
He has previously served as HCS’ executive director for both middle and secondary schools, as well as a principal specialist for Support Services.
Maxey was the principal at Conway High School for five years (2000-2005) and at Carolina Forest High School for two years (1998-2000).
He was an assistant principal and technology coordinator at Loris High School after six years of teaching English at the school.
Prior to beginning his career in secondary education, Maxey was an English instructor at both Presbyterian College and Clemson University.
Maxey earned post-graduate and doctoral degrees in Educational Leadership from the University of South Carolina.
He also holds a master’s and a bachelor’s degree in English from Clemson University.
