CONWAY, SC (PRESS RELEASE) – Adults interested in learning basic computer skills, time-saving shortcuts or formatting secrets may study for free in April and May at two Adult Learning Centers.
Horry County Schools Adult Education is hosting free computer skills classes at both Conway Education Center, 1620 Sherwood Drive, and Myrtle Beach Family Learning Center, 3101 Oak Street.
Classes begin April 7 and will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and from Noon to 2:00 p.m. on Fridays.
Other ongoing programs at Adult Education include classes to earn the GED certificate, complete a high school diploma, earn a Work KeysÒ career readiness certificate, or improve English as a Second Language skills. Weekly registration includes orientation, placement testing, and computer literacy evaluation.
Classes are open to any person age 17 or older who has officially withdrawn from school and meet Monday through Friday; students select from flexible time slots to accommodate their individual schedules. All registration, testing and course fees are free, as a result of business partnerships and grants between federal and state government entities and the SC Department of Education’s Office of Adult Education.
Students who want to earn a high school diploma must successfully complete the requirements for 24 Carnegie units. Units previously earned in high school do count and will be verified on each student’s high school transcript.
The General Educational Development test is an alternate way for an adult to receive a high school credential. The test covers competencies in four subject areas: Reasoning Through Language Arts; Mathematical Reasoning; Science; and Social Studies. Each Adult Education Center provides screening and practice tests, as well as individualized courses of study, for students interested in taking the GED test. More than 9,000 adults in South Carolina take the GED test each year. Students can register for the computerized test at www.GEDcomputer.com or by calling 843-488-6200.
Educational childcare is available for children up to age 5 whose parents are participating in Adult Education programs. Childcare is free, however parents must participate in Parent & Child Together time and parenting classes.
Additional programs and services include various English as a Second Language classes, from beginner to advanced; adult basic education; college prep; skills improvement; and career and college readiness activities. All Adult Education programs and services are available at both Conway Education Center and Myrtle Beach Family Learning Center, in addition to various satellite centers including Finklea Community Center, Socastee Library and three Goodwill Job Link Center sites.
