CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – The Horry County Planning Commission approved a rezoning request for a piece of land tied to the proposed construction of a new Horry County Fire Rescue station.

The county wants to relocate Horry County Fire Rescue Station 23 to along SC-544, near Singleton Ridge Road.

Last year, an agreement was discussed to sell the 2.62 acres of property along Victory Lane that is currently occupied by Horry County Fire Rescue to Horry-Georgetown Technical College. The request would help grow its Conway campus.  According to a decision paper, multiple appraisals valued the land and property at $350,000.  However, Horry County leaders say the cost of property acquisition and construction will substantially exceed that amount.

Janet Carter with Horry County Planning Department said the commission approved the rezoning after finding it was consistent with the county’s plan.

Lisa Bourcier, Horry County spokesperson said that reviews are required for all new public facilities, according to state code.

Horry County Councilman Johnny Vaught says a contract is still pending on the land and expects the deal to close within a week.
