Some people who live in Horry County plan to speak up in protest of a proposed tax increase.
Conservative Republicans affiliated with the Horry County Conservative Republicans group and the Republican Liberty Caucus (RLC) have promoted a gathering of tax increase opponents at the next Horry County Council Meeting. The county’s budget is up for third and final reading at that meeting on Tuesday, June 16.
The concerned property owners say they want to show up en masse at the council meeting to express their opposition.
“Everyone should go. Everyone should have an opportunity to speak and voice their opposition to the tax increase to the county council meeting,” commented Cary Rowell after a regular meeting of the Horry County Republican Women’s Club on Tuesday.
Rowell is a candidate for the currently vacant District 6 seat on Horry County Council.
Sharon Pollard is a homeowner who recently moved from Pennsylvania; she has concerns about tax increases in Horry County. She said one reason she moved was to escape tax increases.
“I have no problem with any employee asking for a pay raise,” Pollard said the club meeting. “I do have a problem with using people’s property as that funding mechanism.”
Pollard said she plans to attend Tuesday’s meeting.
Horry County Council has already passed two readings of the budget, which includes the tax increase. That increase would cost about 28 dollars per year on a home worth $100,000.
