COLUMBIA, NC (WNCT) – A tractor trailer driver wasn’t injured after high winds during a severe thunderstorm blew the trailer over the side of the Alligator River Bridge Tuesday morning.

Tyrrell County Sheriff Daryll Liverman said the 911 center got the call just after 10 a.m. about the incident.

Deputies from the Tyrrell County Sheriff’s Office, Dare County Sheriff’s Office, troopers from the North Carolina Highway Patrol and NCDOT workers all responded to the scene. When they got there, they found the tractor trailer empty. It’s believed it happened during a severe thunderstorm when high winds blew the trailer over the side of the bridge. The truck was traveling west on the bridge when this occurred. NCDOT responded due to fuel leaking from the vehicle.

Tyrrell County Emergency Management set up a message board warning motorist that the bridge was closed. As of 1:25 p.m., the bridge remained closed.

The driver was not injured.
