Schools are places for learning. At Burgess Elementary they are also working to preserve the history of the area and the school.
The school opened in 2007 alongside the museum.
Donna Hooks was the school’s first principal when both opened. “The idea was to teach our children and teach the community and honor those who came before us.” Hooks said.
The school’s current principal, Samantha Coy agrees saying “it’s a great place to start and gives us a chance to tell about our country and our rich history, that people may or may not know about.”
The School and Museum are named after William Burgess who ran the Burgess post office. A replica of that building is now in the museum.
Carl Holmes is a local historian and a big reason for the museum. “It’s a good feeling.” Holmes says “you can look back on your ancestors and find things you never knew. I could come here every day and sit down and reminisce about it.”
The museum is free and it’s growing, for students and for the community.
