CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Horry Georgetown Technical College invited high school students, parents, teachers, designers and construction industry representatives to the Conway Campus for the 8th Annual Engineering Day on Thursday.
Design competitions covered several areas, including concrete, bridge and robotics. Organizers use the event as a way to attract high school students to the field.
“Including myself most students in high school that are skilled in math and science and are interested in that area at least have no idea what opportunities there are for them. Even the term engineering can be intimidating for them at times,” HGTC Engineering Department Chair David Lewis said.
Thursday’s event also featured recent graduates from HGTC’s program to give students a better perspective of what’s available to them.
“There’s such a variety and it’s just not connecting with the local high schools students and we really want to let them know the wide variety of opportunities that are out there,” Lewis added.
Students from Horry and Georgetown Counties participated in Thursday’s fair and many are already considering a major in Engineering. Ximena Cortez is a student at Myrtle Beach High School and says she would like to see more women in the field.
“That’s the first thing that comes to mind is because women are set up specific roles like nursing or teachers and I really don’t like that. I don’t enjoy that. I think I can do way more,” Cortez added.
