CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Horry County police say no shots were fired and no charges have been filed in Thursday’s barricaded person situation at the CampusWalk Apartments near Coastal Carolina University.

“Our investigation since the resolution of the incident shows that no firearms were located in subject’s apartment, and it is believed that no shots were fired,” HCPD spokesperson Mikayla Moskov said in a press release on Friday. “At this time, there are no charges in relation to this incident, and it remains an active investigation.”

“It is believed that the subject was making the aforementioned “popping” noises through other means,” added the release.

HCPD was called to an incident at the apartment complex on Hicks Circle in the Conway area around 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, according to the release. The initial call for service was for “shots fired” at the apartment complex.

“Officers initially responding to the scene did observe a sound similar to that of gunshots, and the situation was addressed as such,” added the release. “CCU PD and Conway PD also initially responded to the scene, but the investigation and operations were ultimately handed over to HCPD Special Operations.”

The release further said that an attempt to make contact with the subject was made, but that person “barricaded himself in the apartment and refused to communicate with police.”

“Negotiations and the bomb team attempted to make contact with the individual through multiple means before ultimately attempted to use gas canisters to bring the individual out, as well as bomb robots to see inside the apartment,” the release also said. “Horry County police are thankful for the hard work of the emergency responders on scene who were able to peacefully and safely resolve this situation. We are also grateful for the coordination and cooperation of our community members during this incident.”

Police said the situation was resolved without incident Thursday night and one person was taken into custody.

Neighbors in surrounding areas of the CampusWalk Apartments near Coastal Carolina University had been evacuated. At about midnight, the individual involved was in police custody.

Police have not released the name of the person involved. “I will say we were able to identify him before we went in there, so we used a variety of sources for that information,” said Moskov. Police added the person was a 22-year-old male, but could not determine whether he attended CCU or not.

Police asked those who were not evacuated to “shelter in place, or avoid the area until advised otherwise.”

HCPD Special Operations was also on scene, the department said in another tweet. “HCPD Special Operations is working to resolve the situation swiftly and safely. We are continuing to ask that community members steer clear of the area.”

Law enforcement officers were on scene, according to a tweet from the university.

“Shots fired incident. Students at CampusWalk Apartments need to shelter in place,” the tweet said. “Law enforcement on scene investigating.”

Horry County police assisted, according to Mikayla Moskov with HCDP. CCU PD and Conway police were also involved. The Horry County SWAT team was also on scene.

Just before 11 p.m., Horry County PD said that those in the area may hear the sound of gas canisters being used in an attempt to bring out the barricaded individual.
