HORRY COUNTY, SC (WBTW) – Horry County Fire Rescue officials had an area of the Intracoastal Waterway taped off and were searching for a missing man Friday afternoon. Officials with HCFR say the body was discovered around 8:30 p.m. Friday.
Horry County Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler identified the man as Shawn Smith. Fowler said the 36 year old was homeless.
Rescue divers were in a recovery stage after, according to Lt. Raul Denis with Horry County Police, around 4 p.m. two men and one woman attempted to swim across the ICW. One swimmer went under the water and never came back up, adds Lt. Denis. The other two swimmers phoned 911 to report their friend missing in the water.
The search took place on the Intracoastal Waterway near the Boathouse restaurant on Fantasy Harbour. Lt. Denis says the current made it difficult for divers to find the man.
