The Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center (CPRMC) Wound Center is helping raise awareness of chronic wounds during the second annual Wound Care Awareness Week being observed from June 1 to June 5. The Wound Center at Carolina Pines offers advanced therapies to patients suffering from chronic wounds. During this week, Michael Northcutt (program director) will be visiting local physician offices to provide education to help staff identify patients that may benefit from advanced wound care.
It is estimated that chronic wounds affect 6.7 million people in the U.S. and the incidence is rising, fueled by an aging population and increasing rates of diseases and conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and the late effects of radiation therapy. Untreated, chronic wounds can lead to diminished quality of life and possibly amputation of the affected limb.
“Many patients live with chronic wounds for months or even years,” said Brooks Bannister, MD, who serves as Medical Director of The Wound Center at Carolina Pines. “Advanced wound care including hyperbaric oxygen therapy, as part of a comprehensive care plan, can help heal patients faster than traditional methods. It is our mission to raise awareness of chronic wounds as well as the benefits of advanced wound care treatment in the communities we serve.”
