HARTSVILLE, SC (WBTW) – Darlington County law enforcement is investigating a stabbing at a local hospital that put a security guard in the Intensive Care Unit.
According to Sheriff Wayne Byrd, the incident happened at the Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center in Hartsville around 6:30 p.m. Monday.
Bryd said a man was brought to the hospital by deputies for a psychological evaluation after arresting him at his home earlier in the day for a disturbance. The man was admitted at the hospital, and after staff said the man would need additional care, the deputy left.
Around 6:41 p.m. Monday, Hartsville Police were called to the hospital after the man got into an altercation and stabbed a hospital security guard multiple times, Byrd said. The guard was treated for his injuries and put in the ICU. He is listed in stable condition, according to the sheriff.
The suspect was later transported to another mental health facility.
On Wednesday, Hartsville Public Information Officer Russell Cox said David Loren Garrity, 21, of Hartsville was charged in the attack.
