HARTSVILLE, S.C. (WBTW) – The Hartsville Fire Department will use a $2,000 grant to buy smoke alarms.
Fire Marshall Bryan Crowley says a couple of years ago, the city saw an increase in deaths caused by fires. They started a smoke alarm blitz in the city and gave out more than 800 smoke detectors. This year, Crowley said there haven’t been any fatalities and they hope buying more alarms will keep it that way.
“It’s not all about fighting fires! It’s also about doing what we can to make them safer, as well as, putting in smoke alarms,” Crowley said. “A working smoke alarm is your nose and it smells for you at night. So, being able to go to bed at night knowing that you have a working smoke alarm that can wake you up in the middle of the night is tremendous in surviving a fire.”Apply for a smoke alarm here.
