Ham operators to assist in Myrtle Beach Marathon

The Myrtle Beach Marathon is set to take place this weekend, and many groups and organizations will volunteer their time to make sure this year’s race is a huge success. One of the groups to volunteer is the Grand Strand Amateur Radio Club.

Gordon Mooneyhan joined News13 NOW at 9 a.m. on Wednesday to talk about how the radio operators are involved.

The group will provide communication for the marathon medical staff. Ham radio opertors will make it quicker and easier for medical staff to communicate with fellow medics at other medical stations set up along the marathon course. The group will provide about 120 man hours of communication valued at about $3,000.

Events like the marathon help the club prepare for real emergencies. Amateur radio is a hobby that also provides valuable community service at no cost. For more information about how to get involved, contact Mooneyhan at pio@w4gs.org.
