CANTON, N.C. (AP) — Animal rescue groups are trying to find homes for more than 140 dogs surrendered from a property outside of Asheville.
Haywood County Animal Services Director Doyle Teague tells The Asheville Citizen-Times (http://avlne.ws/2g0Nvog ) that the dogs became available for adoption Wednesday.
A Canton family voluntarily surrendered all but four of the animals on their property after Haywood County officials investigated a noise complaint. The caller thought the owners had about 20 dogs, but officials found more than 140 dogs on the property, including 55 that were inside a single-wide mobile home.
Teague says the family members had been taking in strays and things got out of hand.
Between 50 and 60 dogs were being housed at a temporary shelter in Waynesville.
