MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The Myrtle Beach Downtown Redevelopment corporation met Wednesday to discuss ways to grow the city’s brand, as a family friendly beach resort.

Executive Director David Sebok presented several potential projects. One major area of interest is the Super Block, which includes Nance Plaza and the area bounded by 9th Avenue, Broadway, Highway 501 and Main Street.

One idea is to re-direct traffic that runs from 501 to Kings Highway, to 8th Avenue North. Sebok says this will make businesses in the Super Block more pedestrian friendly. The DRC is also working with the Coastal Carolina Association of Realtors on a grant that would help showcase the Super Block as a valuable location.

In addition, Sebok gave an update on the South Mixed-use Area, which runs from 9th Avenue North to Third Avenue South. He said a developer recently bought property between 5th and 6th Avenue and the city wants to work with the developer in building a police substation, parking garage and additional shops at that location.

“It has to be safe, fun and affordable and making it safe and fun are some of the things that the city has been focused on the last several years,” stated Sebok.

The DRC also discussed parking. A presentation showed the city made $1.4 million in revenue from meters last year.
