MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) – More than 900 people have weighed in, but time is running out to comment on building Interstate 73 to Myrtle Beach.
Project manager Steve Brumagin says the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is taking comment through the end of the day on Monday on the $2.4 billion project.
The Corps is evaluating state Transportation Department plans to offset environmental damage from building the interstate that would connect with I-95.
Brumagin tells The Sun News of Myrtle Beach (http://bit.ly/2azfwMS ) the permit decision is not based simply on which side has the most comments.
Advocates say the interstate is needed as a hurricane evacuation route and to provide a direct link for visitors to Grand Strand beaches. Opponents argue it’s too expensive and bad for the environment.
