MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – After a year of silence, a young white shark pup has just pinged off the coast of Myrtle Beach, according to Ocearch.

The tracking organization reported on Tuesday it heard from Gurney, a 4.5-foot juvenile male white shark. “So good to hear from this little shark,” posted Ocearch.

Gurney, first tagged off Montauk, NY, has been known to winter in the Carolina waters. He was last seen in February 2018 off Wilmington.  He was reported to weigh about 61 pounds then.

“The nice thing about migrating during winter is if the water gets too cold, the sharks can head a bit further south or offsore to find some warmer water,” Ocearch posted on Gurney’s Twitter page.

Gurney has his own Twitter page with 1,886 followers. “Gurney is likely eating fish and maybe some squid too,” Ocearch retweeted.

The organization’s website allows users to follow the movements of almost 200 sharks in real time all over the world. Each animal with a tag has a profile online with information about their species, size, location and a section for photos, videos and even a link to the shark’s Twitter account run by OCEARCH researchers.
