LORIS, SC (WBTW) – WBTW News 13 participates in Founders Day of Caring every year, and this year, we’ll be volunteering with the Help 4 Kids Summer Camp in Loris.
Help 4 Kids was created by Barb Mains in 1989 and the purpose is to make sure kids in Horry County don’t go hungry. They host a summer camp each year to go along with their mission where kids get to do positive learning activities, play games, and take home meals. The program is completely volunteer-based, and News 13 will be spending Friday with children at the Cedar Branch Community Center camp in Loris.
“It means a lot to them because they are out there in the neighborhoods, and there’s not any stores or places to do anything,” said Mains. “So here come these people to play with them, and have fun, and eat with them, and it’s really a good thing.”
She said kids often have meals during the school year, but during the summer, that can drastically change. “Soon as school’s out, they don’t get breakfast or lunch, so it’s very important for us to make sure they get food,” said Mains. “Knowing they can come every day, eat, and have fun is very important, because other than that, they would be home and might not have any food.”
The Help 4 Kids summer camp has five locations in Horry County. The camps are free and last until the beginning of the school year. To sign up or donate food and clothes, call Help 4 Kids at 843.651.4310.
In addition to Help 4 Kids, News 13 will be volunteering with United Way in Lumberton. Last year, News 13 spent Founders Day of Caring volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and United Way. Click this link to see the full story.
