Volunteers and conservationists helped to restore an oyster reef in Murrells Inlet on Tuesday.
The restoration project took place at the public boat landing. New reefs were built with recycled shells, with the hope of attracting new oysters.
“Each adult mature oyster, once they attach to these recycled shells, can filter up to two and a half gallons an hour,” says Chris Hawley, the Coastal Conservation Association Waccamaw Chapter Chairman. “A lot of what they do is keep the boat wake. It’s primarily erosion control on the bank right here across from the high traffic area.”
