SOCASTEE, SC (WBTW) – Mercy Chefs, a non-profit disaster relief organization, has been cooking meals twice a day for flood victims in Socastee.
Charles Clawson has been volunteering with the group every day through his church, and he says he has seen how the flood has impacted the community.
“The people would just come in with tears just streaming down their faces, and it would just break your heart,” Clawson said.
Volunteers have been handing out around 1,000 hot meals, two times each day, cooked inside of the Mercy Chefs food truck.
The organization travels around the country to help after disasters, and they say they saw a need in Socastee.
“When we got here, we saw story after story of people who just didn’t have anything. They were cleaning out their homes, and just trying to make it through everyday life without eating at all,” Chef James Leach with Mercy Chefs said.
According to Leach, the Mercy Chefs meals are restaurant-quality.
“We try to give the best food we can, something that our families would want to eat, to other people,” Leach said.
Volunteers say they see how the meals have made a big impact on people who are recovering from the flood.
“It’s wonderful to see some kind of relief,” Clawson said.
The Mercy Chefs truck is stationed at 4570 Socastee Blvd. Meals are available Monday-Saturday, 11 a.m.- 1 p.m., 4-6p.m., and Sunday, 4-6 p.m. They will be cooking meals until Wednesday evening.
