HORRY COUNTY, SC (WBTW) – United Way of Horry County and Horry County Schools are partnering together to make sure students aren’t falling behind during the school year.
Instructional coaches and teachers are working with United Way to identify which students are not getting enough academic attention and are struggling in the classroom.
Julia Nichols with United Way of Horry County said they are providing volunteer mentors and tutors to give kids more personal attention. “Make an impact on a student’s life,” said Nichols. “They really need that one-on-one time to elevate their learning opportunity and get them back on track so they can succeed further in life.”
This program is for elementary students because it is one of the most critical times to make sure kids are up to par on their education. “Research has shown that the third-grade level is really the level where kids need to be reading on grade level,” said Nichols. She said if they are falling behind, it can slow down their entire education process in the future.
The tutors and mentors will focus on school subjects, but Nichols said they will also work with kids on living a positive life. “A true relationship with that student,” said Nichols. “So not only is this becoming a learning process, but also a mentorship with that student.”
The four schools participating in this program are Socastee Elementary, Lakewood Elementary, Loris Elementary, and Daisy Elementary. Nichols said they are planning to expand the program to more schools in the county. The sessions start on Sept. 3, and if you want to become a volunteer mentor, visit the United Way of Horry County website.
