CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – For 20 years, the United Way of Horry County has been handing out May Day bags, but before any bags can go out, supplies need to come in.
The United Way of Horry County and BB&T’s Lighthouse Project are putting together 1,000 bags to hand out to shut-in seniors throughout Horry County.
According to the United Way of Horry County, sometimes the only people area seniors talk to are the ones that deliver their food.
“Our shut-in seniors are those throughout Horry County that may not get to get out and get just some of the basic needs,” said Travis Dannelly, president and CEO of the United Way of Horry County, “such as a toothbrush, body wash, soap, hand sanitizer, a coffee mug or tea mug, a pinwheel, something that brings a smile to their face, and a little bit of support to their life. Sometimes it’s the only people they see once a month.”
“We love it, we do,” said Lauren Mazurkiewicz, assistant vice president and business services officer of BB&T. “We have helped several charities. We do it throughout the footprint, and it’s great to volunteer and really get involved and help folks in need. This project is really impactful for the county and so we’re just really excited to be involved with the May Day bags.”
Bags can be picked up at any chamber of commerce throughout Horry County. Take a bag, fill it with the supplies, and bring it back by Friday, April 26th.
Also each bag will contain a letter from a local kindergartener as part of the United Way and CCU’S “Caring for Kindergartners” program.
Bags can be filled with the following items:
Toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, body wash, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, tissue, lotions, powders, stationary, pens, first aid kid, any special gift item (ie. crossword puzzles)
