It was an emotional reunion at the Myrtle Beach Airport Wednesday as an army officer is back in the arms of his family after serving overseas.

Hugh Smith, a U.S. Army Warrant Officer, has spent the last nine months in Afghanistan and returned home on a day that celebrates freedom. His parents, younger brother and sister, and local military and veteran groups greeted him at the airport.

Smith says “it’s amazing, I really can’t describe it. It’s the best feeling, such a relief to be home, to be in South Carolina, just all the support and love, I really appreciate it.”

Ginger Smith, Hugh’s mother, says “I don’t even have the words to describe it.”

Floyd Smith, Hugh’s father, adds “that’s right, I don’t even know, the words don’t come to me that need to come to describe the feeling of having him back home.”

The Smith family is from Aynor, where Hugh went to high school before going to college at The Citadel.

As for his July 4th plans, Hugh says he plans to spend the holiday just enjoying being home with his family.
