MYRTLE BEACH, (SC)- According to AAA, 54 million Americans will travel for Thanksgiving, and that number is the highest it’s been in more than a dozen years with the largest growth in flying.

Officials at Myrtle Beach International Airport said tomorrow will be their busiest travel day.

Kathy Shuler and her husband can’t wait to catch their flight.

“We’re going to Washington D.C. to visit my son, daughter in-law, and two grandsons. We travel there because it’s easier for grandparents to travel then a family with two small children,” said Shuler.

They aren’t the only ones, officials with Horry County Department of Airports said seat counts are up 7 percent from last year with 47,000 people traveling. Tomorrow will be their busiest day with seat counts up 20 percent from last year.

Spokesperson, Kirk Lovell said they’re seeing more people flying because the economy is doing better, and Myrtle Beach International offers more flight options. While MYR is pretty easy to get through, passengers said that isn’t the case for their destination.

“D.C. is rough getting there, you better be standing on the curb for whoever is picking you up or you’ll get ticketed,” said Kathleen Moore.

“Detroit is going to be nuts, and as a matter of fact, we came early because we thought it would really be crazy today,” said Charles Valuet.

Charles Valuet is also worried about the icy weather impacting the Northeast

“I’m worried about the plane not being able to get in to Detroit because I talked to my son this morning, and my son said they had all kinds of ice and that they closed roads and everything else,” said Valuet.

Airport officials said people should get to the airport 2 hours before their flight.
