Horry County Council members honored two people for their bravery and heroism during last week’s Windsor Green fire in the Carolina Forest area.
Blake Cannon, a 16-year-old student at Carolina Forest High School, immediately sprang into action and helped save a toddler from the blaze.
Cannon, who had already made it to safety on the ground, offered to catch the three-year-old child who was being held by her family on the third floor.
Cannon received an honorary plaque and a room full of applause during Tuesday night’s council meeting.
“It just feels good,” he said after the presentation. “Everybody standing and clapping and saying thank you is just, it feels good to save somebody’s life.”
Firefighter Davis Trussell, a five-year employee of HCFR, was also honored for his bravery. Trussell saved a woman and her dog from their burning apartment.
“I’m not one to pat my back a lot,” Trussell said, “But it feels good. It feels good knowing that the lady, that she’s got more life to live; it wasn’t her time. There’s a family that can now speak with her and spend time with her, and not just that, but the dog.”
Council members also praised Horry County Fire, Police, and EMS Dispatch for their quick response and professionalism during the incident.
