A suspect is in custody following a police chase involving the Georgetown County and Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Offices.
According to a press release from the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office, deputies have arrested Rayburn Rashad Scott in connection to the chase. The press release says Scott fired shots at deputies pursuing him on Highway 521.
The chase ended in Williamsburg County with Williamsburg County deputies assisted in apprehending Scott.
According to a post from the Georgetown Police Department’s Facebook page, the chase began after officers were called to the Verizon store on North Fraser Street about a disorderly customer with a firearm. The police department says, Scott entered the store and demanded a cell phone. Police say he was wearing a handgun on his side in plain view.
He allegedly threatened to kill an employee if he did not get a phone. Employees at the store managed to get into the back of the store and call the police.
Later, police say Scott went outside to his vehicle and was sitting in it when officers arrived. Scott was ordered out of his car by officers, but instead backed up and fled the scene, according to police.
A pursuit then began and Scott drove down Highmarket Street, police say. The Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office then took over the pursuit. It ended in Williamsburg County.
The Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office charged Scott with attempted murder, discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle and failure to stop for blue lights and siren. Additional charges are pending. Online booking records for the Georgetown County Detention Center show Scott was booked around 5 p.m. on Friday.
The Georgetown Police Department posted on Facebook Friday evening that it plans to charge Scott with attempted armed robbery, assault, unlawful possession of a handgun and failure to stop for blue lights and siren.
The Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Office and South Carolina Highway Patrol also assisted in the case.
