SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – One Grand Strand town is getting ready to ban single-use plastic bags and lawmakers there want to make the ban’s rollout smooth for businesses and residents.
At Tuesday’s town council meeting, the Surfside town council decided to have a drop-in workshop to explain the plastic bag ban. It goes into effect June 1 and prevents any business in the town from giving out single-use plastic bags.
Town council member Ron Ott proposed holding a workshop, saying some businesses and residents don’t know what to expect when the ban goes into effect.
“We need to educate our residents and our businesses on exactly what we’re looking for,” Ott said. “We’re not looking to punish anybody. We’re looking to work as a group and help the environment.”
The town’s interim administrator will schedule the workshop for sometime this month.
The town council also voted Tuesday night to enter negotiations for a permanent town administrator. However, mayor Bob Childs declined to name that person.
Surfside Beach also welcomed some new members to town council at Tuesday’s meeting.
Debbie Scoles and Bruce Dietrich were officially sworn in at tonight’s meeting. Scoles and Dietrich were elected last month, replacing former council members Tim Courtney and Julie Samples.
Incumbent David Pellegrino was sworn in for another term and was also elected mayor pro tempore at Tuesday’s meeting.
