SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Surfside Beach Police plan to issue more citations to those who violate the town’s golf cart ordinances.
Chief Kenneth Hofmann says this month, the department has towed away several golf carts after people were caught driving after dark, which is forbidden by law since 2015.
“We feel like we’ve gone several years with the education and warnings phase, and eventually people just don’t take that seriously,” Chief Hofmann said.
After posting a flashing sign telling golf cart drivers they could be fined for driving at night near a busy intersection in the town, police say the law is often still broken.
“I kinda tend to think people are on vacation, and they just think it’ll be okay,” Chief Hofmann said.
Surfside Beach Police Department says they are taking the violation of driving golf carts in the dark more seriously, including towing golf carts, now that they have been educating people on the law for the past three years.
“When we stop someone for driving at night, we can’t just cite them and let them drive away and keep driving at night,” Chief Hofmann said.
The owner of the golf cart will be responsible for the tow yard fee, in addition to a $130 ticket for breaking the law.
According to Chief Hofmann, the rules are there to ensure the public’s safety.
