SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Surfside no longer wants to run its town elections and is asking Horry County to take over.
Mayor Bob Childs wrote a letter to the Horry County Voters Registration and Elections Department last week, asking it to take over Surfside’s elections. Town council discussed the idea Tuesday night.
Horry County would manage everything the town does right now, including filing candidates, advertising and counting the votes. This would move Surfside’s elections from April to November of odd-number years.
However, council members said they want to move to November of even-number years, on the same day as midterm or Presidential elections.
“I like the idea of holding it during when all the other elections are being held,” said council member Randle Stevens.
“Part of the reason we have a problem in this town with maybe 20 percent voter average is that people just don’t really stay on top of our somewhat obscure election date,” said Patricia Magliette of Surfside.
Horry County Council must agree to this, before Surfside can pass a law handing over control to the county.
