SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The town approved an idea to bring more people and businesses to its oceanfront called the entertainment district to go along with a planned $10 million pier.

Surfside’s town council gave final approval to the e-district Tuesday night. The e-district is about seven acres of land near the town’s pier between Surfside Drive, First Avenue South and Dogwood Drive South.

Amendments to the e-district’s rules will allow for outdoor entertainment until midnight and bars can serve alcohol outdoors.

The town says this ordinance helps reach the goal of attracting more businesses and making downtown more walkable.

“We have to have an e-district that is valuable to the people who invest their money,” said council member Randle Stevens.

While critics of the e-district say it could hurt the look of Surfside, the town’s leaders disagree.

“We could pass an ordinance on the entertainment district with so much regulation that it’s going to be too expensive for anyone to invest,” said council member David Pellegrino.

There are other additions to the e-district’s rules like stormwater regulations that town council still needs to approve.
