Students and faculty share stories of recovery at HGTC series event

Each year, Horry-Georgetown Technical College Professor Casey King creates his annual Addiction and Recovery Series to be different than last year’s.

King asked students and faculty to share their own stories of recovery at today’s part of the four week series.

Adam Wicker was one of those who came forward to tell his story at Horry-Georgetown Technical College’s annual Addiction and Recovery series this week.

“As with anyone, it’s a ride. It’s not easy. Anyone that tries to pretend that it is out of touch with reality in my opinion,” said Wicker. “If there is a key, or a secret code to get past it and make it easy, I’d love to know what it is.”

He talked about his own recovery from drug addiction and gave advice to the audience.

“The first time that you catch yourself venturing down a road that’s going to lead you back down a path you already know what it’s like, for me that’s where you hit the brakes,” he said.

Professor Casey King, who’s also a recovering addict, created the series. He says the program is unlike any other of its kind in the world.

What’s the goal of the program?

“The entire series was designed to change the face of recovery,” said King. “My goal was to make people think of something different when they think of people in recovery.”

King makes it a point to invite celebrity speakers who have experienced recovery themselves to these events as well.

He says it shows those recovering that just because they’re a celebrity, they’re no different than any other person in recovery.

Everclear’s songwriter and guitarist, Art Alexakis will be at the final series event Thursday, February 21.
