Horry County leaders have a better idea of how they want to spend different block grants that are aimed at addressing affordable housing and community development needs.
Every year the county gets federal money to help neighborhoods in need, and the Community Development Office puts together a plan for where the money will go.
The county will spend more than $2 million of Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) to help low income areas. The cities of Myrtle Beach and Conway also get some of that money: $479,486 and $281,078, respectively.
The county’s portion of the grant will target the Racepath area and also help rehab other low-income homes. About $12,000 will go to after-school and summer programs run by Phoenix Renaissance Inc. at the Racepath Community Center.
The county also looks to hire a full-time code enforcement officer to cut down on neighborhood blight.
“It is a facelift for different communities throughout Horry County,” county spokesperson Kelly Moore said. “It makes communities a better place for people to live, and so that’s why we focus our efforts with that grant money”
There’s also another $182,000 Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) the county will administer to different homelessness organizations for them to help people on the streets.
The Home Investment Partnership (HOME) grant, a $1.1 million dollar grant, will be shared by Horry and Georgetown Counties to build affordable housing and rehab single-family homes
