SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – For the past week, as the Carolinas anxiously waited for Florence to make landfall.
One town on the South Strand has heavily relied on a community Facebook page to lookout for one another. One family in Surfside Beach says social media has actually provided comfort during the storm.
As neighbors in Surfside Beach questioned whether they should evacuate, where they could house their pets, and if their home would be damaged when they returned, the “Surfsidian Facebook Page” has been a powerful tool for helping relieve stress during Florence’s rage.
“There was a lady who said her 85-year-old grandma was here, she couldn’t move her. So, I told her I would check on her if it got that bad. I have a list of people to check on. Everybody has a list and that’s just how we were handling helping each other,” says Katherine Reeve, Surfside Beach homeowner and member of Surfsidians page.
Reeve says people who evacuated also used the page to offer their homes as shelter for those who stayed.
“Everybody opened their homes to animals and I did that right away. And I knew I was staying because my neighbor across the street has one of those high rises that’s three stories, and that gave me a lot of ease knowing I could just run or swim across the street,” Reeve says.
