SOCASTEE, SC (WBTW) – Socastee neighbors in Lawson’s Landing are lifting their homes to avoid anymore potential flooding.

David DeVooght, owner of DeVooght House Lifters traveled from Wisconsin to help lift homes that flooded after Hurricane Florence in Horry County.

“We have about 20 lifted in this area so far, and each day more goes up,” DeVooght said.

He says Lawson’s Landing isn’t marked as a flood zone, but that hasn’t stopped some homes from flooding multiple times.

“People really want to figure out what to do with their house. They don’t wanna get flooded again; they don’t wanna lose all of their stuff again, so once the new maps come out, the flood heights and all of that gets settled, people can lift their house, and hopefully they won’t get flooded again if they put it at the right height,” DeVooght said.

DeVooght says the process of lifting a house takes around 60 days from start to finish.

First, engineers have to come assess where they can place the steel beams used to lift the house. After, the lifters put in the steel beams.

“Once it’s all set, we put our hydraulic jacks under that lift and hook it to our 12 jack unified machine, and set the pressures and push the lever,” DeVooght said.
