MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The Grand Strand joins a growing national trend of smartphone apps bringing groceries right to your home.

It’s called Shipt and it’s the first app in the Myrtle Beach area that exclusively delivers food and other essentials.

Sarah Ferreira of Myrtle Beach is a new kind of grocery shopper in the area and she’s getting paid to do it.

“I was looking for a second job that had the flexibility for the scheduling to work at my other job,” Ferreira said.

Ferreira shops for Shipt, a same-day grocery delivery app that launched in the Myrtle Beach area last week. Shipt works with Bi-Lo, Kroger, Publix and Target. Target bought Shipt in December.

Shipt is competing with other services like InstaCart, Peapod and AmazonFresh, as more shoppers trade physical shopping carts for virtual ones.

“Myrtle Beach was important to us (because) one, being able to service the residents of Myrtle Beach, but then, also servicing our members that travel to Myrtle Beach for vacation,” said Amy Leachman, who’s a partner success manager for Shipt.

Ferreira says she’s already delivered to tourists.

“Yeah, we’ll deliver it to your resort,” she said.

When you buy fruit, eggs or anything else on Shipt, the app gives you a one-hour window when your order will arrive. Shipt allows you to buy just about anything you can find in the aisles of stores like Bi-Lo. When you use the app, just choose the store you want, then start looking through the categories.

You can even buy some things other than food, depending on the store.

“We do all dry goods, household goods,” said Ferreira. “I purchased a bocce ball set.”

Ferreira says she’s prepared for even more deliveries if more people decide to use Shipt.

“I get to do my favorite thing, which is shopping, and helping people get the food that they want,” Ferreira said.

Shipt does require you to be a member to get deliveries. It normally costs $99 per year or $14 a month.

Shipt is offering $49 annual memberships in the Myrtle Beach area until Tuesday, May 22, to celebrate the app’s launch in the Grand Strand. Click here for the discounted rate.

Shipt is available on the Apple and Google Play stores.
