The most popular dance in the Carolina’s, which originated on the Grand Strand, was the inspiration for the movie Shag.
The movie was produced in part with the South Carolina Film Commission and earned nearly $7 million dollars.
It was filmed all throughout the Grand Strand and this year is celebrating the 30th anniversary of it’s release.
Bill Barber, a long-time shagger and six-time national champion, said the movie helped spread the love for shag dancing around the country.
“There are shag clubs in New York, St. Louis, Los Angeles, California; people are teaching it out there and expanding it,” Barber said. “It has grown tremendously nationwide, worldwide really.”
A celebration of the film’s 30 year anniversary will be held today in the Market Common with a restaurant tour and private screening of the movie. For more information or tickets, click here.
