SCDOT to close Highway 707 intersection for roadwork, safety

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WBTW) – The South Carolina Department of Transportation is expected to close down a Highway 707 intersection on Tuesday morning.

McDowell Shortcut Rd. South at Highway 707 will be closed so crews can raise the intersection one foot higher to match the rest of Highway 707. This project is part of the 707 widening project, which is expected to be finished in the fall.

Kelly Moore with Horry County said though closing down the intersection affects how people travel, it is the most ideal way to get the project finished. “It will enable them to do the work more quickly,” said Moore. “But it’s also unsafe to travel because the distance between where the road level is now and where they’re raising it to would be unsafe to cross.”

Moore said people living nearby should not have a problem with their daily routine.

“Folks who live on that section of the road will be able to get to their houses just as they typically would, but for people using that road to commute, they’ll want to use Tournament Rd. for a potential alternative route,” said Moore.

Moore said the intersection is on the south end of Highway 707, not the intersection near St. James Middle School. The project was supposed to start Monday morning, but it got delayed because of the weather. Crews are expected to start work around 9 a.m. Tuesday morning, and they’re hoping to be finished by 5 p.m. Friday.
