CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – The state Department of Transportation says the contractor working on the South Carolina Highway 31 extension owes about $3 million for not finishing on time.
That’s what SCDOT engineers told Horry County Council while giving an update at Tuesday night’s meeting. Council also got an update from the county on the RIDE II and RIDE III programs.
The SCDOT engineers say Flatiron Construction owes $5,000 per day. As of March 31, when the project was 587 days late, Flatiron owed $2,935,000. That money is deducted from the final project cost.
The engineers also say cracks in the concrete deck were also discovered on the bridge crossing the Intracoastal Waterway.
“We have been working to determine the best method to rework that portion of the deck, so we get the full lifespan of the bridge that we’re paying for,” said SCDOT construction engineer Travis Patrick.
SCDOT says there’s no date set for when the highway 31 extension will be completed. It was originally scheduled to be finished in June 2017.
SCDOT also says Flatiron didn’t consult the DOT when placing signs saying a ramp near 544 would open on April 8.
