CONWAY, SC (WBTW)- SCDOT crews work to remove flood barriers along Highway 501 in Conway.
There are about 100 people working to deconstruct the barrier, and until it’s finished U.S. 501 Bypass will be down to one lane in both directions.
Crews are working to remove a mile and a half long flood barrier on both sides of U.S. 501 bypass.
It’s made of about 2,500 sand bags that weigh one ton each, and 45,000 smaller sandbags.
SCDOT said drivers should expect delays and congestion. They also ask people to avoid the area and use SC-22 instead. SDOT is reminding people to drive slow since workers will be on the highway working around the clock to finish the project.
“It’s also a large task to finish and clean up because we would like traffic to be using all four lanes as soon as possible. Southern Asphault and A.O. Hardee will have multiple crews working 24 hours a day everyday during the week until the project is completed,” said Philip Bethea, construction engineer with SCDOT.
SCDOT said it could a week or two before the project is finished and 501 Bypass is back to normal.
