Due to the anticipated flooding SC-DOT crews will be restricting lanes on the US-17 bridge over the Waccamaw River near Georgetown.

According to a Facebook post on the SC-DOT page this is so crews can begin building a barrier wall on the bridge. Construction of that wall is expected to begin at noon, Sunday. US-17 will be restricted to one lane in each direction.

SC-DOT warns people to expect congestion and delays and asks people to avoid the area if possible.

The National Guard is working on a backup plan to the barrier, preparing to set up a ferry system for personnel and equipment, according to a press release.

The ferry will only be used for those whose needs are “of critical nature,” said Capt. Joseph Varin of the 125th MRBC, who is the lead engineer of the project.
