MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The 21st Myrtle Beach Marathon happens this weekend, and the course is 26.2 miles long.
The race starts and finishes near the intersection of 21st Avenue North and Grissom Parkway, so that intersection will be closed throughout the morning. Grissom Parkway at 29th Avenue North will be closed, and northbound traffic on Ocean Blvd. will be for runners only. A map of the race course is available from the marathon organizers.
City officials say barricades will be placed along the course to keep runners safe. The US 17 Bypass is not a part of the course, but officials still suggest giving yourself extra time when heading out the door.
This year, the Myrtle Beach Police Department plans to use their Hyper-Reach communication system to send alerts to residents about things like roads being closed, roads re-opening, or in any case of an emergency.
“We can send out that notification to a group for the city or to a neighborhood group that specifically may be impacted by something,” said Captain Joey Crosby with the Myrtle Beach Police Department.
