CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – The Family Justice Center wants to raise $1.5 million to start a domestic violence shelter in Horry County.
“It’s desperately needed,” said Fred Nesta, the Horry County Fundraising Chair for the Family Justice Center. Right now, the closest shelter is in Georgetown and has only 12 beds.
The newest plan to raise money involves using restaurants and the community to raise some of the money. Starting in about two weeks, participating restaurants will be able to put an extra line on the bill to add a donation and all money will go directly to the Family Justice Center.’
Thermometers will be placed in those businesses so owners can track their progress.
“Bringing business people a lot of awareness,” said Nesta. “And we believe that putting out the fundraising thermometers will help bring some nice awareness.”
Angelo’s Steak and Pasta will be one of the restaurants involved and owner, Angelo Antonucci, said he’s ready to get started.
“Bullying and the things that take place in our world, people taking advantage of another person really makes me angry,” said Antonucci. “But helping people to recuperate from being abused in any way; I’d be happy to do all I can for them.”
The goal is to have all $1.5 million raised by the end of 2018 so the shelter can open in 2019. The group plans to also host a silent auction and their second annual “Let’s Stop the Violence” rally in Myrtle Beach.
