Residents fill nearly 14,000 sandbags at Socastee High School ahead of possible flooding

People on the Intracoastal Waterway in Socastee are preparing for severe flooding by filling sandbags.

Hundreds of people, many of them young, came together at Socastee High School on Thursday and filled up to 14,000 sandbags to deliver to neighborhoods that may see flooding.

The National Weather Service expects the waterway to crest between 21 and 23 feet on September 28. During Hurricane Matthew, the waterway crested at 17.9 feet.

“That might mean evacuating. That might mean just getting ready for water to limit their access to things and there could be some electricity problems,” says Kelly more, Horry County spokesperson.
