NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The American Red Cross has opened six shelters in Horry County ahead of anticipated flooding. The shelters are located at Loris Elementary, Horry Georgetown Tech, Conway Recreation Center, Whittemore Park Middle, Ocean Drive Elementary, and North Myrtle Beach High School.

“We don’t really know what to expect, but we just have to be ready,” Tom Bischoff, a Red Cross Volunteer at North Myrtle Beach High School said.

The North Myrtle Beach High shelter location was empty Friday afternoon, however, volunteers said they saw around eight people check in Thursday night.

“There was a couple this morning who’s home had flooding. The woman said she had to wake up her husband from a nap because there was a couple feet of water in the house. They got out; they did not have any evacuation orders or any information to evacuate, but when they saw the water, they knew it was time,” Bischoff said.

The American Red Cross said they are prepared to handle any situation, including having to evacuate a shelter and open a new location if flooding occurs. According to the Red Cross, they will never turn anyone away, and they will stay open as long as necessary.
